Baldness or hair loss is associated with number of factors
which are associated with the lifestyle options and choices like drinking,
smoking, diet etc.
Drinking alcohol chronically may contribute to hair loss as
alcohol causes dehydration, which in turn causes the brittleness of the hair.
Alcohol also causes increase in level of oestrogen which again hampers the
growth of hair. Alcoholism leads to lowering of essential vitamins like B, C
and folic acid and also essential mineral like zinc which are necessary for
healthy hair.
Lack of sleep is one of the factors affecting the hair
growth. Alteration in sleep pattern of deprivation of sleep can lead to
alteration in hormonal levels, physical and mental stress. .
Persons who like to style their hair in particular pattern
like tight braids or tight ponytail, combing the hair tightly and too
frequently can also have hair loss due to traction, which may be called
traction alopecia.
Drinking less water or dehydration may cause increase in hair
loss. Body is composed of 60-65% water. Lack of water leads to the lack of
lustre in the hair, which leads to the brittleness of hair. During dehydration
when the volume of circulation reduces, the body shunts the water to the vital
organs leading decrease in amount of water to the hair root. Water is also
essential for certain vitamins. So a person should at least 8-10 glasses of
water everyday.
Stress is one of the major contributing factors for hair
loss in today’s world. The prolonged and chronic period of stress may lead hair
loss. The stress produces increase in cortisol and adrenaline which leads to
the recruitment of hair in the resting phase.
Poor eating habits and crash diet can lead to under
nourishment and hence hair loss.
Protein deficiency may contribute to hair loss as the hair shaft is made of
keratin. The essential amino acids like L-lysine are important factor for the
growth of the hair. The minerals like iron and zinc and also the essential
vitamins like Biotin, Vitamin E, Vitamin C also plays an important role in
growth and maintenance of the healthy hair. So a balance diet is necessary for
the maintainence for healthy hair and it should include optimum quantity of
carbohydrate, proteins, fats , minerals and vitamins.
